Dxtory
This is actually a paid software made by the japanese with a free trial version.
For the paid version you need 3600 yen which comes down to approximately 36 US dollars

I used this software to limit my FPS since my laptop overheats easily due to its poor heat control

To use this for free you need to wait 10 seconds to use it every time it starts

The program is able to detect the game automatically mine is an exe file. First you need to check synchronize video FPS under Movie Settings.
And under Advanced, you need to choose the number of processing thread and the FPS you want the game to be run with.

In my case, it's 350fps since I need the fps to be high for quicker response as it's a rhythm game. If it's an FPS game, you wouldn't need more than 62fps. Usually you would want to choose the lowest fps so that it doesn't go up and down and affect your gaming experience. if it jumps from 70 to 85 fps, just limit it at 70.

This software support directX 7 up to directX 11.1 as I type. However, it requires microsoft framework 4 to be installed (I have 4.5 installed currently). It also has a capture function but you need to set up a folder for the movie under folder settings which I haven't actually tried and will update in the future.

Game Booster
I use the very first version of game booster by Iobit which is completed in end 2010 because they are adding more stuff from version 2 to the Razer game booster which offers the paid version. I don't really paid for softwares and I prefer to keep my softwares light.
This program helps you to choose and disable unnecessary windows services and allows you to enable it if something goes wrong.

Since I have disabled most of my services PERMANENTLY with SMART (Service Management And Releasy Tweaking). There isn't much process for me to stop, if your laptop is untweaked then there would be up to 8 services at least which can save you a lot of memory.

I will upload the link for game booster 1.6 here soon as I don't have much internet speed

This software works for windows XP and up. not sure about older OS

TCP optimizer by speedguide.net
This software is a must-have especially for users having high bandwidth (10Mbps and above)

I used and uninstalled the program sometime ago, so I'll be borrowing their screenshot
You need to make sure that the connection speed, adapter are correct and check the optimal setting, when you apply the setting the program will prompt you for backup. (100% of the time I don't need the backup)

 OS: Windows 9x/ME/2K/XP/XP-SP2/2k3/Vista/7/2008 | version: 3.0.8 | date: 09/17/2011 | filesize: 640 KB

 Iobit SmartDefrag
There are alot of free defragmenting software nowadays but I am sticking to this one as it loads fast, defrags more thoroughly compared to windows default and again I am using the first version 1.50 because of the same reasons as game booster.

It picks up any external storage and is able to defrag them. Like any other defragmenting softwares, you can schedule the task to run every week.

supports Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / Server 2008 / 7 / NT
will upload link later

Combined Community Codec Pack
There are many other video playing softwares out there but I am mainly use CCCP and VLC because CCCP is able to play videos without any noise and stuff and does not make my windows hang.

Whereas VLC is able to play a wider variety of video and audio format and it can also open audio CD the downside is that it sometimes cause the computer to lag but it is gradually being improved.

I am sticking to VLC since I have always been using it, if you have other software that let's you listen to playlist and etc etc etc then just leave it.

CCCP is a freeware which updates itself roughly every half a year and uses media player classic home cinema with a large variety of video and audio codecs.

and don't ask me why it looks like Soviet Union

I ran K-ON Movie at 1080p for 2 minutes, the cpu usage varied around 14% ~ 23% and the memory stayed the same throughout. My processor is an i5-480M
And most subtitles would work using CCCP as well, one disadvantage is that sometimes the sound is not loud enough for movies

OS:Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista and XP SP3

CCleaner
This is the software that everyone recommends, it can help you wipe off temporary files, offline files that you don't need and free up lots of space.(Sometimes up to 10GB, depending on how long you've used the computer)

You can also clear unwanted registries (not recommended for normal users)
You can also turn off startup programs, browser add-ons that slows down your computer
